July
7, 2004 - Mosport Raceway, Ontrario and Lime Rock Park, Connecticut
After missing Rounds 3 and 4 of the Cooper Tires Formula SCCA
National Championship, David Jurca was back in action for rounds
5,6, 7, and 8. Debuting with the Motion Dynamics team in Mosport,
Jurca was unable to get the car to his liking for rounds 5 and 6.
After qualifying 4th, Jurca and his Motion Dynamics crew were able
to improve the car a bit for the race.David would finish third in
round 5 after making a move from fourth to third on lap two.
Round six at Mosport saw some tricky conditions. At the drop of
the green flag, the track was wet and the drivers were on slick
tires. By the end of the race, Jurca would move up from third to
second.
"I really want to thank Motion Dynamics for their last minute
effort to get me a car for the Mosport race. They're a new team
in Formula SCCA competition but their potential is huge and I look
forward to working with them again," commented Jurca. "Also,
without the help of Serengeti Design, European Tile Inc., and the
Cooper Tires Championship Series, I would not have been able to
run this race. Finally, I would like to thank Todd McCall from On
Track Promotions for his hospitality and event photos as well as
Melanie from Speed Secrets for the coaching."
The Fourth of July weekend would see David Jurca particpating in
the New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut. Running
out of the Motion Dynamics team again, Jurca was hoping to build
on his results from Mosport, Canada.
After an intensely close qualifying session which saw the top 3
spots changing with every lap, David qualified 3rd for race one,
only a few hundredths of a second off of pole position. In the race,
Jurca went too low on tire pressure and was unable to find any grip
for the first 5 laps. After dropping to sixth, he made his way back
up to third.
During qualifying for race two, Davd held the top spot until the
last minute of the half hour qualfying session where he lost pole
position by less than 2 hundredths. Starting on the front row, Jurca
got the jump into turn one and led. Pecorari would pass Jurca down
the straight on lap two. After following Pecorari for the next ten
laps, David's car began to understeer and he was unable to challenge
for the lead. With two laps to go, a caution came out and the field
bunched up. By that time, Jurca's front tires were worn out and
on the restart Franklin Futrelle was able to get by for second and
David finished third.
"This weekend we were able to show the true potential of the
Motion Dynamics team. With a little more experience, we should be
able to have a winning race setup as well," explained Jurca.
"I'd like to give a big thanks to Serengeti Design, European
Tile Inc., Bob Kim, Mindingo Bay Stud Farms, and the Cooper Tires
Championship Series. I would also like to thank Speed Secrets as
their coaching has been a huge benefit to my 2004 season."
Like many drivers in the newly formed Formula SCCA Championship,
Jurca began his racing career in karts. Displaying great natural
talent, the 19 year-old quickly progressed up the karting ranks,
winning numerous championships. By 2000, Jurca was racing in the
upper echelons of karting in North America. Currently the number
one ranked shifter kart driver in North America by Shifter Kart
Illustrated, Jurca won the 2002 SKUSA SuperNationals Pro IC race
and the 2003 SKUSA ProMoto West Zone Championship. He was also a
2003 Skip Barber Champ Car Scholarship Driver and one of six finalists
in the Red Bull F1 Driver Search.
Widely regarded as North America's premier training series, the
Cooper Tires Championship Series offers the complete motorsports
education, with emphasis on cost-effective racing. Racing throughout
the United States and Canada, the Cooper Series will showcase the
best young drivers from around the world on a challenging mix of
racetracks.
